Chapter 8 - Media Illustration

Levels of Confirmation and Disconfirmation

The first clip is from Scrubs and it deals with disconfirmation of recognition. Recognition is the most basic form of communication and it is pretty much comprised of taking notice that there is another person in the vicinity. Elliot and Kelso get into an argument regarding a patient and Dr. Cox commentates the argument while the other two completely ignore him.

The second clip is from The Office and it deals with disconfirmation of acknowledgment. Acknowledgement is the second level of communication and deals with simply responding to someone (whether the response be verbal or nonverbal). In this episode, Jim was "co-manager" for four and a half hours and Dwight is the first person to give him flack for it. Instead of responding to the statements, Jim simply grabs Dwight's tie and sticks it in his cup of coffee.

The third clip is from That 70's Show and it deals with disconfirmation of endorsement. Endorsement is the strongest level of confirmation and it entails being accepting of someone else's thoughts and feelings. Kitty comes in to the living room and asks Red if he's seen the stray cat which leads to him saying that he sprayed the cat with a garden hose. Kitty brings up the idea of getting a pet cat of her own and Red thinks that it's a ridiculous idea.
